Happy Friday!
We are at the end of our first full week! This week has really flown by.
Spelling Homework – Look for your child’s spelling homework that will be coming home on Monday. We did the spelling work together this week so they would know what I expect them to do. They write all twelve words three times each on the sheet. This needs to be turned in by Thursday. If they finish it before Thursday they can go ahead and turn it in. Please don’t forget to practice your child’s spelling words with them at home too.
Next Week’s Spelling Words: We will be working with short e words.

Spelling Tests: I do want to explain how the spelling tests are graded. It is important for the kids to write their letters correctly instead of backwards. Their name tags have the alphabet on it for the kids to be able to use as a resource to double check their letters. I will also remind them to double check their letters for reversals and capital letters before I collect the tests. I also stress the importance of not writing capital letters in these words. They are words that need to be written with lower case letters unless they are at the beginning of a sentence. We really stress this in second grade. I will not count off points for these things on this first test, but they will lose a half point for these things on the other tests after this week.
Parent Orientation Night – Tuesday August 28th from 6:30-7:30 is our 2nd grade Parent Orientation Night. This is a beneficial meeting to give you information about 2nd grade expectations. I really appreciate those of you who sent back the sheet letting me know what you would like to hear about that night.
Reading: We are practicing our Read to Self station in reading. This is a time the kids read quietly to themselves and build stamina as readers. Please ask your child about what we have been doing with read to self.
Math: In math the kids have been working with manipulatives and then they have been learning about equations. Next week we will continue working with equations, we will work with counting coins, and representing mathematical situations in different ways.
