I would like to start this week’s blog with a BIG thank you to all of the parents who could attend the Parent Orientation Night. It means a lot to me that you came to our meeting. I enjoy getting to know my students’ parents. If you were not able to make it to the orientation I will send the packet from last night home with your child today. Please contact me if you have any questions.
A big part of teaching is going back and reflecting on what you did over the day. I usually spend most of my nights thinking about each lesson, what worked, or what I could do differently. That is what I did last night after the meeting with all of you. A new aspect of my classroom this year is the behavior cards and “Think Sheets.” I focused a lot on those last night because I wanted to make sure you knew what the stars meant that kept coming home in their Take Home Folders or the behavior sheets that needed to be signed. I then became frustrated with myself because I don’t want you to think all we do in the classroom is focus on behavior and who flips a card. My number one goal is to educate your children. I focus on ways to challenge those who need a challenge and help those who are frustrated because the work seems too hard for them. I want your children to leave second grade with a great education from me and be totally prepared for third grade. I cannot thank you enough for giving me the honor of being your child’s second grade teacher!
Spelling:
I will send home the homework page on Monday and it has to be completed and turned in no later than Thursday. Please make sure your child is using a pencil for this and not rushing through just to get it done.
One of the many things I am trying to teach my students is about not capitalizing spelling words. If they write one of their spelling words with a capital letter they will get 1/2 off for that error. Another thing I am going to be working on with them is not reversing the letters or numbers. I have shown them the alphabet strip they have on their name tag at their desk and the one at the front of the room for them to use to make sure their letters look correct. I know this will be corrected with practice, but I am also trying to teach them to double check their work and take time on their work instead of rushing through it.
