Math-Next week in math we will be focusing on strategies to help the kids solve word problems and addition fluency. The addition fluency is where we will be working on ways to remember adding numbers like 7+4 without using a number line or depending on our fingers. We are going to be working on being mathematical thinkers.
We are constantly adding new concepts in math, but come back to time, money, and fluent counting all year. Here are two concepts you can continue to work on with your child at home, telling time to the nearest hour and half hour, and writing numbers in order by ones, fives, and tens. One way to help your child write their numbers is to write a starting point like 89 and they have to continue writing their numbers to 102 by ones. We will have to count to 1,000, but for now you can start small and build on it at home. Same with counting by fives and tens.
Reading-We added our Word Work station to our Daily 5 rotation and this coming week we will be adding Listen to Reading. The kids have been working really hard on building their stamina as readers and writers. I am so proud of their success!
Our reading skills for next week will be focusing on character traits of the characters in the books the kids are reading. This will help them with making connections with the books, better understand what is happening in the book, and help predict what might happen next in their book.
Writing- This week the kids added beginnings and endings to their writing. Next week we will be focusing on adding details to our stories to make them even more entertaining for their intended audience.
Science- I am so excited to see how the kids work together on our science project next week. The project involves a penny and water...fun stuff:)
