The end of our first week is here! It has been a busy week with us trying to get all of the routines down. Next week the kids will all be professional second graders. :)
As you noticed on Monday your child came home with a spelling sheet. Learning how to spell correctly is very important to kids especially at this age. Our spelling system we will be using is not one where the kids are given 10 spelling words to memorize and then on Friday we take a test over those 10 words. This spelling system gives the kids 5 words for the week, but with those words, we are working on spelling patterns and words families. The kids will be given an assessment on Fridays. This assessment consists of a Cloze passage (They read along and fill in the blanks) and then I dictate sentences while they write them down. They will be seeing the words in each unit throughout the year. This is very beneficial to the kids because repetition is a great way to keep the correct spelling in their working memory.

Math- On Monday you will be receiving your child's pre-formative math assessment. This assessment is for you and me to see what they already know and what I really need to work on with them to prepare them for this unit and the final assessment. I will have an information page stapled to the front of your child's assessment to better explain.
In math we are working on addition and subtraction word problems. They will also be learning how to find the unknown in a subtraction or addition problem. We will be working on memorizing their addition and subtraction facts and learning coin values.
Writing- This first unit is narrative writing. The kids are coming up with real-life experiences to write about. We are picking small moments in our life to write about. The kids have taken their first pre-formative writing prompt and that will be coming home next week so you can see where they are at this time in writing.
Behavior- I will be sending home the parent sign-up sheet for you to be able to look at your child's DOJO points at home.
Thank you for letting me be a part of your child's second grade experience. It is going to be a great year!
