Message about spelling: There is going to be a significant change to spelling homework starting in two weeks. Right now the kids do not get points for turning in their weekly spelling homework, but I do keep track of who is turning in their work. The new weekly spelling assignment will be assigned points. The students will earn 15 points weekly for completing their spelling homework and turning it in. Next week is the last week they will get the word study strategy sheet for their spelling homework. The following week they will be given a list of activities they can choose from to do with their spelling words. They will choose three of those activities to complete. I have really thought long and hard about spelling homework, discussed with other educators and have researched educational websites for ideas. This is the option that seemed to be most reasonable for the kids. This will also keep them from having to do the same assignment every week. I will send out more information about the new assignment in next week’s blog. Please let me know if you have any questions. I want to thank you in advance for all of your support!
Lesson #11 Spelling Words
Math: A great way to help your child at home:
- Flash cards for subtraction and addition skills. When using the flash cards if they pause for more than 10 seconds you put that fact to the side and know that is a fact you need to work on.
- Also telling time on an analog clock (not digital) will be very helpful. The kids have to be able to tell the time to five minutes. You can also practice with them by asking them how many minutes past or till the hour it is.
- In math we are working with adding number strands.
The kids are expected to look for numbers that equal ten, are close to ten, or are close to adding a double. This gives them mental strategies that will help strengthen their mental addition. This is the skill they need to have in order to really learn their addition facts.
