Tiger Pride-  Tomorrow at 2:30 is our first Tiger Pride Assembly of the year.  Parents are welcome to come attend the assembly and watch the celebration!  Once the assembly is over, you are more than welcome to take your child home without it affecting your child's attendance.  I do ask that you let me know prior to taking your child home so I know where your child is.:)

Open House- Open house is next Tuesday, the 29th from 6-7.  We would love to have you come and see what is happening in the class!  There will be Smokin' Wheels and Speedy's food trucks available for you to purchase food from for dinner! I will have a sign up sheet for parent teacher conferences out in my classroom during Open House.

Fall Party- We will be having our Fall Party from 11:30-12:30.  Since it will be lunch time, we are going to have pizza.  I have been asked to let you know we are needing $2.00 per child to help cover the cost of the pizza and party.  Thank you in advance!!

Math-We have been working hard on adding and subtracting word story problems using tens and ones.  We will continue focusing on those skills next week.

Reading-I am so excited because we will be starting our guided reading groups next week!

Writing- We are going to be focusing on editing our writing.  Making sure we have transition words, a good beginning, ending, details, actions, talk and use resources to help with unknown words.

Science- Next week we will be doing an experiment with apples.  We will be making daily observations of our apples.  This will be a week long experiment.

Word Work Words- The new words for next week are :
before, put, keep, always, use

Happy Friday!

Fall Party- This year we are having our Fall Party A LOT earlier than we normally do.  We are going to be having it on the half day in October on the 9th.  That day will be here before we know it!!!

Math-Next week in math we will be continuing to focus on strategies that help the kids solve word problems along with addition fluency.
Please continue working on telling time to the nearest hour and half hour, and writing numbers in order by ones, fives, and tens.  Another skill your child would greatly benefit from is counting coins.  They need to be familiar with each coin's name and the value of the coins.  Then they need to be able to count the coins together.  Practicing this at home would be so valuable for your child.

Reading-Next week we will be starting small reading groups so we can go over the expectations in those groups and prepare for starting our guided reading groups.
The skills in reading that will be covered next week are focused around accuracy.  Good readers use the pictures to help them when they get stuck on words, look at the beginning and ending sounds of unknown words, and flip sounds in words such as changing the long i to a short i sound to see if the words sounds right.

Writing- We are going to be using our read aloud book to discover what dialogue looks like, how our author added details to his writing, and how he used action in his writing.  We are going to add these types of crafts to our writing.  I cannot wait to see what the kids come up with!

Science- We only made it to writing our hypothesis and what materials we will use for our lab experiment.  Once they grasp the concept of how to write a hypothesis and document their findings, the experiments will hopefully start moving along a little faster.
Word Work Words- The new words for next week are :
those, many, about, your, will

Math-Next week in math we will be focusing on strategies to help the kids solve word problems and addition fluency.  The addition fluency is where we will be working on ways to remember adding numbers like 7+4 without using a number line or depending on our fingers.  We are going to be working on being mathematical thinkers.
We are constantly adding new concepts in math, but come back to time, money, and fluent counting all year.  Here are two concepts you can continue to work on with your child at home, telling time to the nearest hour and half hour, and writing numbers in order by ones, fives, and tens.  One way to help your child write their numbers is to write a starting point like 89 and they have to continue writing their numbers to 102 by ones.  We will have to count to 1,000, but for now you can start small and build on it at home.  Same with counting by fives and tens.

Reading-We added our Word Work station to our Daily 5 rotation and this coming week we will be adding Listen to Reading.  The kids have been working really hard on building their stamina as readers and writers.  I am so proud of their success!
Our reading skills for next week will be focusing on character traits of the characters in the books the kids are reading.  This will help them with making connections with the books, better understand what is happening in the book, and help predict what might happen next in their book.

Writing- This week the kids added beginnings and endings to their writing.  Next week we will be focusing on adding details to our stories to make them even more entertaining for their intended audience.

Science- I am so excited to see how the kids work together on our science project next week.  The project involves a penny and water...fun stuff:)

Word Work Words- The new words for next week are :

Math- Coins and telling time will be two activities we continue to work on in math and then next week we will be working on counting on with numbers in the hundreds and skip counting by fives and tens in the hundreds also.

Reading-This week we have focused on two Comprehension skills to help us understand what we read.  One of the skills was to use prior knowledge to help us make connections to the text and the other one in monitor and fix-up.  In monitor and fix up they are asking questions as they read like, Who is the book about? What's happening in the story?  Does the story make sense? What is the author trying to tell me?  If they cannot answer these questions, they need to go back and reread.

Writing- Narrative writing is the focus in writing again next week.  They will be focusing on making writing goals for themselves with my help at first and eventually the goal is for them to be able to make their own writing goals independently.

Science- We are continuing our scientific inquiry unit next week.  We will be writing our Problem or Question, Hypothesis along with the materials we will need, Results to our experiment and Conclusion to our experiment.  The following week we will be starting our actual experiment.

Word Work Words- We will not have any new word work words because of the short week.
