Our first full week went well!  The kids had a math and writing assessment to do this week.  They worked really hard.  I am so proud of them!

In writing we are going to be working on narrative pieces.  The kids are going to take small moments from their lives and tell us that story through their writing.  We are going to focus on adding good details to bring their stories alive for the readers, creating great beginnings and endings for their stories, and they are going to assess their own writing to come up with their own goals for their growth as writers.  I am so excited to see how far their writing grows after this quarter.

Below are the skills the kids will be working on in math during this first unit.
  • Identify the unknown in an addition or subtraction word problem
  • Write an addition and subtraction equation with a symbol for the unknown
  • Know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers
  • Know mental strategies for addition and subtraction

Spelling-With changes in curriculum, the kids will not get a weekly class spelling list.  We will be doing phonics lessons and sight words at each individual child's level.  There will not be a weekly spelling test.

Upcoming Events:
Sept. 2- No School -Labor Day
Sept. 20- 12:40 Dismiss
Sept. 27- Tiger Pride
Sept. 30- Open House

Welcome Back!

8/5/2013

Welcome to my blog!  It is hard to believe that summer is almost over and school is going to begin.   I am very excited about starting the new school year.  I know this is going to be a fantastic year!

Here are some important upcoming dates:

Meet the Teacher:  Tuesday, August 13th  6-7:30

First Day of School:  Thursday August 15th

Please bring your school supplies with you to Meet the Teacher Night.  This will save a lot of time on the first day of school.  The only school supplies that need labeled with your child’s name are their school box, scissors, binder, ear buds, and lunch box.

Here is a link to the 2013-2014 school supplies list.

An item the students will need that is not listed on the school list is ear buds.  The students will need these to use with our iPads.  You can find these very cheap at places such as DollarTree, Walgreens, and Walmart. You will need to label these with your child's initials.

Please take a minute to look around our classroom blog.  This will be a very helpful tool to keep you up to date with what is going on in our classroom and in our school.  I will update the blog weekly or as needed.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have at amysmith@willardschools.net.

I am excited to see you on Meet the Teacher Night!
