Math-
We are continuing our double digit addition.  This week we have been learning breaking apart with addition and subtraction.  They have to be able to add the tens first, then the ones, last they add the answers together.

Writing-  We will be taking our assessment on opinion writing Tuesday.  Then we will be starting our poetry unit!!  Just in time for Valentine's Day:)

Next week is the Change a Life Money Wars-  This is a little bit of information about it.  The kids will bring in money and it is a competition between grade levels.  This is the breakdown of what each coin means point wise.

  • Pennies = +1 point
  • Paper money(dollar bills etc.) = +100 pts., +500 pts. etc.
  • Silver money is NEGATIVE!! Dimes, nickles, quarters subtract from your total!
  • What might happen is others will "sabotage" your total by putting silver coins in your banks.  We get to put the silver coins in Mrs. Carter or Mrs. Whisler's bank to take away their points.
  • The classrooms at each grade level with the most points at the end of the week will get a Dance Party in the gym!!!!  This is going to be so much fun!!!!

I know I do not say these two words to all of you enough...Thank you!  I am so thankful for the support you all give to your kids and me.  I am thankful for having the opportunity of being your child's second grade teacher.  It is so heartwarming to know that I have the best parents who only want what is best for their children.  Thank you for all you do as parents to support your child's education and growth as a second grader!

Spelling:  Because this week was a four day week, we decided to have spelling be a review week.  The words for next week will look a little familiar because you got them in the last blog.:-)
Here they are...
  • another
  • came
  • come
  • work
  • three

Math-
We are finished with our data collecting unit.  Now we will be starting our double digit addition.  This is when our Rocket Math practice will come in handy.  Knowing those addition facts and place value will make double digit addition a lot more simple.

Writing-  We are winding down our opinion unit!!!  Like I mentioned last week...they are good at stating their opinions:)

Science-  Please be on the lookout for a small piece of paper regarding our Science Unit coming next week.  We are asking each student to bring in a rock by next Wednesday the 21st for our Science lessons.
We are also needing parents to send in a few items for another science lesson we will be doing.  These also need to be sent to me by Wednesday the 21st.  We are needing:
  • pretzel sticks
  • chocolate chips
  • marshmallows
  • cheerios
Please let me know if you can send any of these items in.

Math
We will be taking our end of unit assessments on graphs this coming Friday, the 23rd.  The kids have been making a lot of line plots this week and next week they will practice making bar graphs and pictographs.

Writing-
These kiddos are so good at writing about their opinions.  We will continue working on these for a few more weeks to help them remember to write introductions, good details, and endings.

Reading-  Reading is such an important part of education.  The kids have to be able to read grade level material to be able to independently complete their work.  I would love to have a strong partnership between home and school when it comes to reading.  One way to accomplish this is to ask your child nightly what he or she read during their independent reading that day.  Ask your child what he or she wrote about during their work on writing during our literacy block.  Have your child tell you about the book he or she is reading.  The benefits from these discussions are monumental.  This lets your child know that you will ask what he or she did during that time and that it is important to be reading to themselves during read to self, or that they are working on writing during work on writing.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thank you in advance for your help!

It looks like the sun will be out for our weekend!  I hope you all have a chance to get out and enjoy it with your family!
Have a great weekend!
